Beijing Transportation
As the capital of China, Beijing boasts an extensive and efficient transportation network. It is straightforward to get to and around Beijing for travelers. City of Beijing is enclosed by five ring roads, with nine expressways in the four directions, eleven national highways, and several railways lines.
By Air
Beijing Capital International Airport
Beijing Capital International Airport is the largest, busiest and most important international airport in China, about 25 km away from the city center of Beijing. It cooperates with 36 international airlines and 21 domestic airlines, serving flights to major domestic and international cities. After arriving at the airport, you can go into the city by the airport express train, airport shuttle bus or airport taxi.
Airport Express Train: This line provides service between Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 of airport to the Dognzhimen via Sanyuanqiao. The whole journey is about 30 minutes and ticket fare is CNY 25 per person.
Airport Shuttle Bus: Travelers can take shuttles between airport and various locations in downtown of Beijing, like Beijing Railway Station, Xidan, Nanyuan Aiport, and Beijing West Railway Station and so on. The shuttle bus runs every 15 or 30 minutes and ticket fare is CNY 16 per person.
Airport Taxi: It costs about CNY 80 to take a taxi from airport to downtown area of Beijing. The whole journey is about 1 hour.
Beijing Nanyuan Airport
Beijing Nanyuan Airport is a relatively small dual-use airport, located in the Fengtai District, about 15 km south of Beijing city center. It offers flights to Wuxi, Kiamusze, Jingdezhen, Dalian, Harbin, Chengdu and Hohhot. The shuttle bus is available between the airport and Xidan Aviation Building. It runs every 1.5 hours and ticket fare is CNY 16.
By Train
Beijing is the national railway hub of China. There are four major passenger railway stations in Beijing and they are Beijing West Railway Station, Beijing Railway Station, Beijing South Railway Station and Beijing North Railway Station respectively. It is easy to get to Beijing by train from any part of China. However, the train travel usually takes much longer than air travel as China is a vast country. In addition, most of the attendants on trains can not speak English. It may be daunting to travel China by rail. If you are going to take a train in China, please remember to check the travel time, the train number, the destination station, etc. before you start.
By Taxi
Taking a taxi is the most convenient way for new comers to Beijing. The taxi fee in Beijing starts from CNY 10 for the first three kilometers and after that CNY 2 is charged for each additional kilometer. During the nighttime (23:00-05:00), the taxi flag fall is CNY 11 for the first 3 kilometers and then CNY 2.4 per kilometer for the remainder of the journey. If the journey is longer than 15 kilometers, the 50 percent late-night surcharge will be charged.
By Subway
Subway is the most convenient and efficient transportation in Beijing and it is a good option to avoid the frequent traffic jams of the city. Currently there are 14 metro lines in Beijing connecting the main commercial areas such as Qianmen, Tiananmen Square and railway stations to the outlying areas. The ticket fare of Beijing subway is CNY 2 regardless the distance. The stops are announced both in Chinese and English.
By Bus
Buses are quite popular in Beijing. Now there are more than 800 bus lines in the city, which link the city centers to the outskirts of the Beijing. In general, the buses in downtown area run between 05:30 and 23:00 every day and the buses in suburban area are in operation from 05:30 to 18:00. The ticket fare is CNY 1 per person for self-service buses. However, if passenger pays it by a Beijing Transportation Smart Card, then only CNY 0.4 is charged.
